Lately, I’ve been thinking about the idea of female empowerment and the issues enabling it in 2017.
This small series of work is a metaphor for breaking the glass ceiling: the idea of pushing through a tough, not quite invisible barrier that keeps many women from reaching their full ambition.
The uncomfortable, tormented, and awkward positions of these female forms illustrate the naked, personal sense of injustice and restriction I imagine many women feel every day.
For me, art is more important now than ever before. Artists need to give ugly but abstract ideas like racism, hate, and suppression a personal and human form: one that forces more people to think and act to enable change.
