Chantal Monaghan’s winning advice for this year’s Girlfriend Model Search hopefuls.

It’s that time of year again! The Girlfriend Model Search is back and looking for its next model superstar.

Brought to you by Chic Management and Priceline Australia, the Girlfriend Model Search has launched the careers of countless Australian supermodels. Current judge and mentor Sam Harris, Abby Lee Kershaw, Ruby Rose, Alyssa Sutherland, Catherine McNeil, Chantal Monaghan, Stephanie Joy Field, and Jessica Gomes are just some of the alumni who have gone on to enjoy incredible international careers.

2009 state finalist Chantal Monaghan entered the Girlfriend Model Search at age 14. Since then, she has gone on to walk the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier and Antonio Grimaldi and can be seen across the pages of Elle Magazine.

According to the Brisbane-born model, the competition prepared her for her now larger-than-life career: “It was my first experience walking in front of such a large crowd. That helped me to gain confidence. It also made me realise I enjoyed the work and being committed to my career.”

For Monaghan, the experience was both exhilarating and nerve-racking. “I was very, very nervous and excited at the same time. I made the state final and then had to pose for the newspaper and walk the stage in front of a large crowd,” Monaghan said.

These pre-teen jitters were not exclusive to Monaghan’s own experience, as one of the model’s stand-out memories was “meeting the other girls and realising they were just as nervous as me.“ This is a sentiment likely also felt by a then-12-year-old Miranda Kerr; the former Victoria’s Secret Angel entered the Girlfriend Model Search in 1996, but was unable to progress in the competition due to her age.

Like Kerr, Monaghan was interested in the modelling industry from a young age, previously modelling for Pumpkin Patch and Little Workers as a child. Now, she has the retrospect of an experienced model and knows exactly what it takes to become a success. To her, the ideal Girlfriend Model should possess three key qualities:

“Confidence, a keen interest in the profession, and a natural ability in front of the camera.”

When asked what guidance she would give to the young hopefuls looking to enter the competition this year, Monaghan had practical advice:

“Be yourself and always be respectful and courteous to everyone,” she said.

“Believe in yourself and follow your dream. Rejection is part of this industry—and if you don’t go all the way to the finals, it doesn’t mean that you can’t continue modelling. You may not have the look a client wants at a particular time, but when one door shuts, another one opens. “
